Winter Sucks:

Winter Sucks
By Khun Greg - khungregsthailand.com

Baby it’s cold outside!

It is that time of year again, winter is upon us with a capital W. I will have to be honest with you. I only vaguely remember the frigid blast of old man winters chill. I always hated the cold weather while growing up in Wisconsin, U.S.A.

Cold weather was always severely painful to my body as a child, whereas hot weather was merely itchy.

I have heard from many people that they could put more clothes on to stay warm in the winter, but they can only take off so much to stay cool in the summer.

I wish it were that simple, but for some of us, being cold is worse than being dead.

Have you ever waited for a school bus when it was 20 below zero outside? You shiver so much your bones ache. Mornings like that were the only time kids didn’t fight at the bus stop.

I remember a few times the heat didn’t work on the bus. It was so cold that you could see your breath on the bus all the way to school.

Snowball fights were common at the bus stop. Kids were ruthless with their very well packed snowballs. Getting hit in the ear with one of them sure enhances your love for the snow.

I wish products like these were available back in the 1980’s, the cold would have been more tolerable than…

Heated clothing will make winter suck a little bit less.

The last time I fell victim to winters curse was 1990, after that unfortunate year in my life I moved to South Florida, it never snows there. They do have some strong hurricanes in Florida however.

Call me crazy, but I will gladly take the occasional damage from nature’s wrath over five months of unbearable cold every single day, and every year it seemed to just get colder.

Living in Florida wasn’t quite the Utopia that I had imagined it would be from the perspective of life in the frigid artic weather that I had desired to escape from.

Florida has a seasonal economy. Feast or famine as some would say. During the winter months when all of the snow birds from up North came down to enjoy the warm weather, overtime pay was abundant, and money flowed freely.

In the summer months you drink the humidity from the stale air, and eat dirt. If you are lucky there will be bugs in the dirt for added protein. It is what it is.

Eventually you get use to the routine of Florida’s economy, and the transient nature of the people living there. I think I marked time there for close to 20 years before a monkey wrench was thrown into my routine.

For a couple of years I planned to buy a nice house on a large piece of land, and in one day, with one chance meeting, she changed all of my plans.

She was a girl from Thailand whom I had met in Key West, Florida.

Before I met her I never had any desire to travel to Thailand, and now I live in Bangkok. It never snows here in Bangkok either.
